Strauss’ side were guilty of some poor fielding as well, with James Anderson and Pietersen making the costly mistake of leaving a potential catch from ten Doeschate to each other after the Dutchman had skied a Swann delivery.
England’s frustration grew in direct proportion to ten Doeschate’s total, and by the time he departed - caught in the deep off the bowling of Stuart Broad in the 49th over - they were shambolic.
The other frontline bowlers also failed to impress. Pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad went for 73 and 65 runs from their 10 overs respectively while swan took two wickets with an economy rate of 3.50 .
England responded with a determined batting performance under the floodlights. The Dutch made the most of their meagre bowling resources with lion hearted performances in a show that should prove a few points to the ICC. Kevin Pietersen struggled in his new role as an opener and if not for the aggressiveness displayed by Strauss, England might have struggled for a decent opening. Trott continued to revel at one down with yet another half-century to continue his amazing consistency at international level. Useful contributions from Bell and Collingwood sealed victory for England, who looked sloppy and unconvincing in the first half of the match.
RN ten Doeschate took two wickets with an economy rate of 4.70 while PM Seelaar and Mudassar Bukhari both took one wicket each.
"I have been struggling with my form and to have come out with such a performance has been overwhelming. It would have been good if we had won. We paced our innings well, I was a bit surprised that we batted first. We were brave enough to bat first, we kept assessing our total after every five overs and went on to post a competitive score. We need to carry on and play better cricket." Ryan ten Doeschate said.
"We got a lot of things wrong with our bowling and we let them off the hook a couple of times. We need to learn from our mistakes, all credit to the way Ryan ten Doeschate played. We were disappointed in the field and thankfully the batsmen got us through. We got off to a good start, we were a little more nervy, and we have to improve as the tournament goes on. Looking forward to playing against India on Sunday. Hopefully we spoil the Indian party at Bangalore." Said Strauss.
