Lalit Modi popularly know as the Founder and Architect of the Indian Premier League on Tuesday agreed to the fact that the rules were tweaked to allow Flintoff to remains with Chennai.
As per the rules of the Indian Premier League all the players participating in IPL are supposed to go back to the auction after the first three years. Modi said that he was arm twisted into allowing Flintoff to stay with the Chennai team. Modi said the retention clause was not his idea and had created a level playing field.
Narayanaswami Srinivasan the president of the BCCI had received an e-mail from Modi on 4th February 2009 assuring him that he had convinced the Rajasthan Royals and their captain Shane Warne not to bid for Flintoff.
Modi had written
"What a nightmare to convince them not to terminate Tanveer and also not to take Flintoff. Warne went of the handle. But have managed it by using stick and carrot strategy. Thus they have 1.875 million dollars only. Much love Lalit."
BCCI President in reply had wrote
"Thanks. You are most sweet. Srini."
On Feb 6th 2009, Chennai Super Kings bought Flintoff for $1.55million. Flintoff and Pollard was the most expensive player in the second edition of IPL .
